MiniLit is a Tier 2 small group program up to four students per group within a Response to Intervention framework, but it can also be used on a one-to-one basis. MiniLit is available to schools only. MiniLit should be delivered times per week, for one hour per lesson.

Project summary A small-group reading intervention for struggling Year 1 students, focusing on five literacy skills: 1 Phonemic Awareness, 2 Phonics, 3 Fluency, 4 Vocabulary and 5 Comprehension. MiniLit is an early literacy intervention for struggling Year 1 readers, which aims at improving five literacy skills of 1 Phonemic Awareness, 2 Phonics, 3 Fluency, 4 Vocabulary and 5 Comprehension, particularly the first three. Delivered by teachers and paraprofessionals trained as MiniLit tutors, the intervention consists of 80 unique lessons. Students are assessed fortnightly to repeat lessons if necessary, to achieve mastery before proceeding to the next lesson block.

MiniLit is an early literacy intervention program that has been developed to provide teachers with a carefully sequenced and structured program of instruction for small groups of children who, after a year of initial instruction are struggling with the mechanics of learning to read. We are focussing on students in Year 1 and Year 2. The program includes the development of phonemic awareness, phonic word attack skills, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. LLI is a small group intervention program designed to support students who are struggling to meet their year-level literacy learning goals. The program provides explicit instruction in phonics, word work and comprehension. Student reading data has been used to identify students in Year 2 to Year 4.
